The Spotlight!

For our inaugural Newsletter we’ve chosen to Spotlight….

Sarah Shorthose, Owner of Sarah Jane Photography.

Even from an early age Sarah had one passion. “Photography!” She’s described it as “My destiny”, “Love” And “Passion”

At 12 she got her first camera and by 16 was freelancing while she worked at a small studio. Just so she could see how it was done. She attended school at the University of Central Mo where she got her Bachelors in Portrait and Wedding photography.

After College she and her husband moved to Decatur, Illinois where she started her business.

After a lot of work, she had The Dream. In 2019 they had built their very own custom studio! When Sarah’s two daughters first road their bikes around the studio, under the sign with her name on it, Sarah described the moment as…

-the culmination of everything we’d worked for”

“I wanted to work here till retirement”

But life had different ideas for the future. And Sarah and her husband made plans to move back to Missouri in 2020. However something interesting happened. When Sarah informed her clients of the move, there was a huge outpouring of support and demand for Sarah to continue her work in Oreana IL. She seems to have made an impact there. So that's exactly what she did. Though she now lives in Columbia MO, Sarah kept the dream studio in Illinois and returns every month to catch up on all the photo seasons there.

“We do about a month's worth of work in 4-5 days.”

When asked about the move and the decision to keep the Illinois studio Sarah said

“You have to give yourself permission to shift. That’s what we did.”

Now with a location in Columbia as well Sarah says her business is split nearly 50/50 between the two states. With an emphasis on High school Seniors and Portraits Sarah also does work for families (especially around Christmas), Corporate and Branding work as well. But that’s not where her work ends…

Sarah is a speaker at small business events and women's retreats. And does business coaching and mentoring as well. Where she will sit down with you one on one for two hours to get to understand your business and how she can help.

“I love encouraging people to write their own story”

  • Sarah’s biggest inspiration:  Allison Tyler Jones

  • Bachelors in Photography from: University of Central Missouri

It's important to Sarah and her husband to be good role models to their two daughters. They have taught them from a young age to be self-reliant and independent to the point where their oldest (age 9) negotiates her own pay for helping out around the house, at the business or when watering the neighbors flowers! But sometimes they have to remind her that $20, per case to pack branded band aids, might be more than the market can bear.

If you could give your younger self any advice what would it be?

“You have the power to define and redefine what success means to you.”

In conclusion, Sarah Jane is an incredible business woman, mother, entrepreneur and community leader. I will leave you with this quote from her…

“Get rid of ‘what Should I do’ and work on Could, ‘what could I do?” -Sarah Shorthose

So, What Could you do?

A huge thanks to Sarah for her participation on this weeks issue. Go give her a follow on all her socials and if you ever need your picture taken, she’s got you covered!
